Profile

Västra Nylands Folkhögskola has shaped for itself a strong profile in certain subject areas and our competence in these fields has reached a considerable level of expertise.

Our expertise is strong in the following areas: the visual arts and handicraft, photography and graphic design, drama, dance, languages, international issues and social science.

The College cooperates with universities in southern Finland and with universities and polytechnics in other countries. A number of Open University courses are taught every year. They include the behavioural and the social sciences courses. Additionally, there are some natural science courses. Our main university partners are Åbo Akademi University and Helsinki University. Our major important partner in the teaching of the visual arts is the University for the Creative Arts in England.

Accommodation
Living on campus offers you an opportunity to be part of a community and many students therefore choose to live in the halls of residence. The four halls next to the college building accommodate 160 students. There are two- or three-room flats with a communal pantry and shower room. The kitchen has a cooker, a fridge and a microwave oven. Next to the halls are the town park and the Svartå river with strolling paths on its banks. This is a scene of natural beauty throughout the year. The town centre with shops, banks, a health centre, chemist’s shops, library, bus station, railway station, cinema, theatre and pubs is ten minutes’ walk away.
All flats have a wireless internet connection. A small fee is charged for access to the internet on campus. If you do not have your own computer to use in your room, please enquire at the study office about renting a laptop.

Normally two students share a room. If you want a single room, please enquire about availability. There is an extra weekly charge for single rooms. Please consult the section FAQ for more information about fees.

Please note that you need to have your own insurance covering your personal belongings and accident insurance for your leisure time.

Meals
All meals are prepared in the college by the kitchen staff. Meals are served in the college dining room Monday to Friday. Special diets are provided when necessary.
Those who live on campus may have breakfast, lunch, a light afternoon meal and dinner. Those who live off campus may have lunch and a light afternoon meal, but may also buy tickets for other meals when necessary.
