Digital Photography
Core Subjects
The subjects cannot be sharply separated, and they are, as a rule integrated in the creative process. The descriptions below reflect the body of knowledge that the programme aims to provide.
Title of Course: Theory of Photographic Technique
Duration: 70 hrs (= 50 + 20) (MN)
(Under the headings “Photographic Technique, Theory” and
“Workshop” in the syllabus.)
Aims and Content: Students learn the functions and systems of the
system camera, their working tool as photographers. Concepts, technical
terminology, basic photographic technique, practical exercises.
Title of Course: Visual Expression
Duration: 132 hrs (= 99 + 33) (FW)
(Under the headings “Visual Expression and Image Analysis”
and “Image Theory”.)
Aims and Content: Students practise observing images, studying them
critically, and formulating an independent view of their
visual and artistic qualities. Students also practise defining visual modes
of expression and are encouraged to trust their own judgement.
Composition and aesthetic balance are also discussed. The
course forms a bridge to and a basis for the portfolio. Practical exercises,
feedback and analyses of work.
Title of course: Digital and Creative Image Processing
Duration: 83 hrs (= 33 + 50) (FW), 66 (KS)
(Under the headings “Digital Images”, “Illustration and Mixed Media”
and “Digital Photography” in the syllabus.)
Aims and Content: Students learn the formats used for images, in net production and in print. Concrete examples and exercises: the image en route from the eye/the camera to the computer, followed by creative applications and feedback. Students are trained to analyse visual art independently. Project work.
Title of Course: Photoshop
Duration: 66 hrs (FW)
(Under the heading “Photoshop” in the syllabus.)
Aims and Content: Integrated into the course. Continuous theoretical
and practical work.
Title of Course: Graphic Design
Duration: 99 hrs ( = 66 + 33) (FW)
(Under the headings “Graphic Design and Make-up” and “WWW-
Design” in the syllabus.)
Aims and Content: Students learn to use programmes such as Photoshop
and InDesign. The focus is on typography, image processing, layout,
and visual design. Applications and exercises. Project work.
Title of Course: Portfolios and Exhibitions
Duration: 116 hrs (= 66 + 33 + 17) (FW)
(Under the headings “Portfolio”, “Special Projects” and “Study Visits
and Exhibitions” in the syllabus.)
Aims and Content: Presentation of the portfolio method, its functions and
possibilities in various contexts. Concrete work with the portfolio,
expression, character, layout and image processing.
Title of Course: Methods of Presentation
Duration: 45 hrs (FW)
(Under the heading “Tutorials” in the syllabus.)
Aims and Content: Continuous instruction in web design and the publication of images. The PDF-format is central for exhibitions and portfolios. Tuition
alongside applicational work.
Title of Course: English, Art and Marketing.
Duration: Short course
Aims and Content: Marketing strategies, bases. The course will be realized, if
possible, in 2008-09, or the lessons may be transferred to substitute
courses.
Title of course: History of Photography I-IV.
Duration: Short courses, 4 x 15 lessons, 60 hrs (MN)
Aims and Content: History of photography, prominent practitioners and
development.
Additionally, the following short course will be arranged during the year:
“Makeup for Photography”.
Common courses for all art students
Title of Course: Theme Week, Theme Work
Duration: 25 hrs (all art teachers)
Aims and Content: Workshops on thematic units for all programmes. The course draws on the accumulated knowledge of teachers from all specialisms. (See separate description.)
Title of Course: History of Art and Culture
Duration: 66 hrs ( Anna Lönnqvist, Urban Fellman)
Aims and Content: A basic survey of the history and development of art and culture.
Title of Course: Topical Information
Duration: 17 hrs (KR)
Aims and Content: Topical information from universities and colleges.
The language courses are open to all students at no extra cost.
