TRADITIONAL PHOTHOGRAPHY

Title of Course: Photographic Technique

Course Description: The course provides a basic knowledge of photographic technique, dark room technique, the photographic processes and individual problem solving. Students learn to use their tools as well as photographic materials and processes, to work in varying conditions and creatively to solve photographic problems so that they can express themselves with fluency photographically. Lessons in theory, demonstrations, practical exercises, assignments and critique, individual tuition.

Duration: 10 hrs/wk during the academic year

Course Literature: Texts provided by teacher

Examination: An examination at the end of each term to assess students’
theoretical knowledge. Participants’ practical skills are
tested by assignments and workshops during the year. Mark
scale: 1-5

Title of Course: Theory of Photographic Technique

Duration: 50 hrs during Autumn Term

Teacher: Markku Nyytäjä

Aim and Content: Students are given a basic knowledge of photochemistry,
light and optics, photographic technique, dark room technique, the
photographic processes and individual problem solving. They learn
the structure and function of their photographic materials and
implements as well as how to work in varying conditions, creatively to
solve technical problems, so that they can express themselves with
fluency photographically. Lessons in theory.

Assessment: An examination at the end of each term to assess students’
theoretical knowledge. Participants’ practical skills are tested
by assignments and workshops during the year. Mark scale: 1-5

Title of Course: Visual Expression and Image Analysis

Course Description: The course helps students to develop their visual insight and their photographic expression. It also teaches students to communicate by means of images and to receive and critically process visual information.
Lessons in theory, demonstrations, practical exercises, assignments and critique, individual tuition.

Duration: 8 hrs/wk during the academic year

Examination: Visual Expression is examined by assignments and workshops during the year. Mark scale: 1-5

Title of Course: History of Photography

Course Description: In this course students learn about the development of photography from a technological curiosity to an independent art form undergoing dynamic development. The knowledge of its origins, its pioneers and its 150-year progress up to the present day affords students a perspective against which to mirror their own work. The course includes different epochs and their representatives, the photographic traditions in different countries, the development of different areas of photography, etc. Students give talks on historical topics of their own choice.

Duration: 60 hrs in four short courses, 15hrs each, including visits to exhibitions.

Course Literature: Texts provided by teacher.

Examination: A test at the end of each term to assess the students’ knowledge of the history of photography. The historical presentations are given in the presence of all the course participants. Mark scale: 1 – 5.

Title of course: Digital Image Processing, Graphic Design and Make-up

Course Description: Students learn to process photographs in digital form with
AdobePhotoshop, graphic design with Adobe Illustrator, make-up
with Adobe InDesign, scanning, colour space, printout, digital image
formats for the web and for print, etc. Theory lessons,
demonstrations, practical exercises, individual tuition, students’ own
work

Duration: 40 hrs during different periods

Teacher: Fredrik Willberg

Course Literature: Texts provided by teacher.

Examination: Students receive tuition for and critique of their assignments
during the course.

Title of Course: Workshop in Photography

Course Description: Students are taught to use a digital camera, to process photographs in digital form with Photoshop and to express themselves photographically. Digital image formats for the web and for print etc. Lessons in theory, demonstrations, practical exercises, individual tuition and students’s own work.

Duration: 20 hrs during the theme week.

Examination: Students receive tuition for and critique of their assignments. A presentation is given of the material produced during the course.

Title of Course: Independent Final Project

Duration: Approximately 75 hrs within the framework of Visual Expression, Photographic Technique and Workshops.

Aims and Content: Students learn to plan and work independently with their image series and critically and analytically to build visual entities such as exhibitions, portfolios and image displays. Individual tuition.

Assessment: Mark scale 1-5.
