Sound Art

Title of Course: Sound as Concept and Artistic Expression
Duration: 50 hrs
Aims and Content: Students learn about sound art as concept and art form. Concepts
such as sound design, sound awareness and sound dramaturgy are
dealt with on the course. Students also familiarize themselves with
international terms such as sound art, sonic art and audio art. The course
provides a background for sound art in its manifold forms as well as
examples of its forms of expression. Sound art is studied
as an independent art form and its function as an integrated part of other
art forms, such as film, dance, performance, video and media art, drama
and many artistic cross-border contexts.
Title of Course: Sound Recordings, Sound Processing and Editing
Duration: 200 hrs
Aims and Content: Students learn recording and sound processing techniques,
microphone and computer techniques, and carry out laboratory
experiments.

Title of Course: Individual Artistic Work, Tuition in Technique and
Conceptualization
Duration: 300 hrs
Aims and Content: Students make their own sound designs and compositions.
They receive tuition in conceptualization, content and technique. The
course takes the form of ‘work in progress’ with the emphasis on
workshop activity. Individual artistic work may consist of several
minor productions or one major production during the year. The
result forms part of the student portfolio.
Title of Course: Dramaturgy as an Artistic Tool
Duration: 50 hrs
Aims and Content: Students learn the elements of dramaturgy and about
dramaturgy as a tool and as an integrated part of all artistic work.
The dramaturgic concept especially in film and music is close to
that in sound art. The course therefore starts out from the concept of
structure, form and content as a whole in film and music. Students
receive tuition in the exploration of the narrative properties of art
production and they also analyse their own reactions to sound
installations.
Title of Course: Sound Art in the Past and the Present
Duration: 50 hrs
Aims and Content: Students familiarize themselves with the development of
sound art from its beginning in the early twentieth century
(1913 “Art of Noises”, manifest by Lugi Russola), the
dadaistic and futuristic traditions, up to conceptual art and
today’s cross-border electronic sound techniques and
expressions. Exemplification.
Title of Course: Professional Practices and Management
Duration: 50 hrs
Aims and Content: Students are given the practical tools necessary for
the documentation and marketing of their own artistic
productions. These include the portfolio and its functions, the writing
of CVs and reports on their own productions Students also learn
how to apply for grants.
Title of Course: Light Design
Duration: 30 hrs
Aims and Content: Students learn about light design as a supplement to
sound design in certain selective contexts, for example
in scenographic contexts and in creative work in which several
art forms interact. This course is in close cooperation with
the drama and dance programmes at the college.
Title of Course: Collaboration with Other Programmes at the College
Duration: 100 hrs
Aims and Content: The course collaborates with the Sound Art course and the other
art courses at the college in order to show how different art forms
relate to each other and how sound is an integrated part of a whole
artistic expression. Collaboration routinely takes place with drama,
dance, photography (traditional and digital), visual arts, web design
and advertising. Practical collaborative projects evolve during the
year.
